Production of this 7-seater SUV began in the autumn of 2005 at the\u00a0Volkswagen Bratislava Plant\u00a0in\u00a0Bratislava, Slovakia.<sup id=\"cite_ref-worldcarfans.com_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>It was the first SUV offering from Audi and went on sale in 2006. Later, Audi&#8217;s second SUV, the\u00a0<a title=\"Audi Q5\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Audi_Q5\">Q5<\/a>, was unveiled as a 2009 model. Audi has since unveiled a third SUV model, the\u00a0Q3, which went on sale in the 3rd quarter of 2011. The Q7 shares a\u00a0Volkswagen Group MLB platform\u00a0and chassis with the\u00a0Bentley Bentayga,\u00a0Lamborghini Urus,\u00a0Porsche Cayenne\u00a0and the\u00a0Volkswagen Touareg<\/p>\n<p>The Q7 (internally designated\u00a0<i>Typ 4L<\/i>) utilizes a modified version of the\u00a0Volkswagen Group PL71 platform. Previewed by the\u00a0Audi Pikes Peak quattro\u00a0concept car, the Q7 is designed more for on-road use, and was not meant for serious off-road use where a\u00a0transfer case\u00a0is needed. In an off-road test through the Australian outback it fared well for a &#8220;soft roader&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Although it lacks a low-range transfer case, it has\u00a0quattro\u00a0permanent four-wheel drive\u00a0system with a central\u00a0locking differential, and a\u00a0self-levelling\u00a0air suspension\u00a0with\u00a0Continuous Damping Control, called\u00a0Adaptive air suspension, which helps in\u00a0off-road\u00a0situations.<\/p>\n<p>Development began in 2002 under the code AU 716, primarily focused on the Pikes Peak Concept. Design work was frozen for the Concept in July 2002, for presentation at the\u00a0North American International Auto Show\u00a0in January 2003. Following the introduction of the concept, full-scale development began on Typ 4L of the PL71 platform.<\/p>\n<p>The production design was frozen in late 2003, for a late 2005 start of production. Prototypes went into testing in 2004, with development concluding in the first half of 2005. It introduced the world&#8217;s only series production passenger car\u00a0V12 TDI\u00a0diesel engine. While the Q7 has been the flagship SUV in Audi&#8217;s product portfolio, a top-of-the-line coup\u00e9 model, called the\u00a0Audi Q8, was released for sale in 2018. It debuted in its concept form at the 2017\u00a0Detroit auto show.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its multiple airbags and safety electronics, such as\u00a0Electronic Stability Programme\u00a0(ESP), the Q7 scored only four stars out of five in the\u00a0Euro NCAP\u00a0crash test for adult occupant protection.<sup id=\"cite_ref-carautoportal_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Audi_Q7#cite_note-carautoportal-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0According to Audi, this was caused by a design error, and has since been fixed in cars manufactured after the test which should allegedly lead to five stars. Official tests to prove this remain to be done as of March 2009.<\/p>\n<p>However, in the United States, the Q7 received five out of five stars from the\u00a0National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) safety test for both front and side impacts.The\u00a0Insurance Institute for Highway Safety\u00a0awarded the Q7 its Top Safety Pick 2009, with\u00a0<i>Good<\/i>\u00a0ratings in all 14 measured categories of the front and side impact test.<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Audi Q7\u00a0is a full-size\u00a0luxury SUV\u00a0made by the German manufacturer\u00a0Audi, unveiled in September 2005 at the\u00a0Frankfurt Motor Show.
